When you see the speed limit e.g. 70mph on the 3-lane highway, do you feel you have to drive at that speed? Or even a bit faster, given that at 72mph you're unlikely to get a fine? Is it better to be in the fast lane, moving to the centre only when a more rapid vehicle comes up behind you? Another way to look at it is to remember that 70mph is the speed LIMIT. It's not the MINIMUM speed, although some drivers behave as if it is. So - if you ease off a bit, to say 67mph and spend most of your time in the middle lane, what's wrong with that? For one thing, it requires quite a lot of brain energy to stay in the fast lane: you need to focus attention that much more. In the middle lane you have more choice: you are not required to give way to a faster vehicle - it has the fast lane to choose. In most cases following cars will adapt to your speed or pass, rather than tail-gating you, as in the fast lane, to move you out of the way. You have more brain space to devote attention to the rest of your life, or what you're listening to on the car audio, or the passing countryside and sky, your fellow-traveller's conversation. This can be applied in the work-place too. You don't always have to be in the fast lane. If you allow this, you can take time to assess your surroundings, your colleagues, the value and quality of the work you're doing. It's well known that a bit of boredom can often trigger new ideas. Allowing yourself a middle-lane boredom-space can be very creative for your long-term ambitions.

I have greatly benefited from working with Graham as a business coach. With deep expertise in investment banking and private equity, he brings a rare combination of financial acumen, strategic insight, and real-world business experience. His advice on acquisition strategy has been particularly valuable in my role as an executive in an M&A advisory firm. I have also appreciated his guidance on leadership challenges, such as communicating with senior management and hiring key talent. He has a nuanced understanding of business culture in Japan and Asia, which makes his coaching especially relevant and impactful.

It has been a great learning journey with Graham for the past year. He helps me on my business English in a corporate world. I learned a lot about effective communication during important meetings and also in daily conversations. Graham is also a very good listener and active thinker to give many constructive recommendations based on his own business experiences. I have received positive feedback from colleagues about my communication skill improvement and I believe the credit should be given Graham.
